Online level 1 Surf Coach Course Information / Overview

Working with the International Surfing Association (ISA) in 2020 , with the Covid 19 pandemic impacting upon the world we adapted the level 1 course format to be run online with remote teaching and learning and assessments. We have been pioneering this approach and are 1 of only a few providers offering this type of programme.

Courses have been very popular during this time and feedback has been really positive from candidates on the courses. We have had a truly International uptake from students all over the world . ie USA, Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, Costa Rica, Europe, Norway, Finland, India, Tahiti , Caribbean, South Africa, Australia as well as from home turf here in the UK.

We will be continuing with this format for the foreseeable future and will also return to classroom face to face teaching as well.

The access and opportunity this format has given to students from around the world has been hugely successful and positively embraced.

Surf Coach Academy Online Courses

Zoom app has been the platform for the virtual classrooms.

Course Modules are covered using teaching resources on Zoom app. ie. PowerPoint, white board, discussions, Q& A. In this way we can cover the theory elements of the course in a very efficient and interactive online format.

There is also a training video of a beginners surfing lesson for review.

The practical elements of the course can be completed by students from distance and assignments returned with technology,

  1. Surfing assessment via film footage, or in person if local, can be arranged to an agreeable time and place.
  2. Venue analysis returned via email.
  3. Film evidence of your delivering a section of the beginner surf lesson
  4. Lesson plan returned via email.

Courses online generally from 9 am – 5.30pm x 2 days. UK time zone

At SCA we have found advantages to this style and format of teaching and learning. The online courses have proved to be more popular than the class based option. Due to this we will continue to develop and run online programmes for easy access and opportunities for students from many countries.

Online ISA Level 2 surf coach courses

In recent years, SCA has developed the ISA level 2 course to be delivered via an online format.

Zoom app being the format for delivery ,

Candidates need to provide film footage of themselves surfing both for course assessment purposes and for on course peer to peer coaching analysis and feedback.

Additional teaching resources and film are used for topics including , manoeuvre analysis, movement patterns for surfing, Physical fitness and training, sports psychology , surfing contest judging etc.

The course is very interactive and has many workshop sessions/ tasks and discussion.

I am so glad I had the chance to join the course. I really appreciated the structure, which provided a lot of valuable information and even insights from your coaching experience. Additionally, the group tasks in smaller chat rooms were fantastic for interacting and learning from each other.

I found the analysis of correct technique followed by video material to be an amazing exercise—it has definitely changed my way of looking at surf footage. I have three pages of A4 notes! Today, I went surfing and applied the technical corrections to my waves, and it really worked! I had a couple of way better angles with reentries, and I was looking in the right direction while doing a cutback. The amount of speed it gave me was incredible! There is still a lot to improve but that’s is a life of a surfer.

The course not only improved my technical skills but also provided me with a deeper understanding of the mechanics of surfing. Your detailed feedback and the way you broke down each movement were extremely helpful. It’s clear that your extensive experience and passion for coaching shine through in your teaching.
